Heads Up - We're not the National Park

When searching in Google Maps, you may see two results: Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia and Hunter Wetlands National Park. These are two separate places. Make sure you select Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia at 1 Wetlands Place, Shortland - the National Park is located on Ash island across the Hunter River and is not where we are.

By Car

We're easy to find from Newcastle CBD and the Hunter Motorway. Enter "1 Wetlands Place, Shortland" into your GPS or maps app and it will bring you straight to the gate.

From Newcastle CBD, take the A43 out of the city and follow on to Maitland Rd heading north to Maitland. Turn left onto Wallsend Rd and onto Sandgate Rd. Turn right at the roundabout into the Wetlands Centre.

From the Hunter Motorway (M15), take the Hexham exit and follow Beresfield Road south, then turn onto Wallsend Rd and onto Sandgate Road heading towards Shortland. Turn right at the roundabout into the Wetlands Centre.

Free on-site parking is available for all visitors. Our car park can fill quickly on weekends, school holidays, and during special events. If you're visiting during a peak period, we recommend arriving early — the car park is busiest between 10am and 1pm. If the main carpark is full please proceed to carpark 2, the grassy area on the right as you drive in.

By Public Transport

Bus routes 47 and 27 stop on Sandgate Road, approximately a 6–8 minute walk from the entrance. Use the Transport NSW Trip Planner at transportnsw.info to plan your journey from anywhere in Newcastle.

The nearest train station is Warabrook, which is around a 25-minute walk from the Centre. We'd recommend combining the train with a bus connection rather than walking the full distance.

By Bike

The Centre is accessible by bike via Sandgate Road, and there are bike racks available at the entrance. The area is mostly flat, making it a pleasant ride from the inner suburbs.
If you're coming from the city, the Ironbark Creek shared path connects through Warabrook and offers a quieter off-road route for part of the journey.
