Become a Friend of the Wetlands

Protecting the Wetlands. Protecting our Future.

Becoming a Friend of the Wetlands is one of the most meaningful ways you can support the ongoing conservation, restoration, and care of this 43-hectare sanctuary.
More than 40 years ago, ecologist Max Maddock imagined something remarkable, a community-driven wetland restoration project that would bring nature back to life on a degraded site in Shortland.

Thanks to thousands of volunteers, supporters, and champions, that vision has grown into the Hunter Wetlands Centre we all know today: a thriving, Ramsar-listed ecosystem visited by families, schools, and community groups every year.

Today, we’re inviting you to help carry that legacy forward. For just $25 per month, your tax deductible donation helps us to:
  • Restore habitats and improve biodiversity
  • Maintain our wetlands, woodlands and waterways
  • Support our volunteers who contribute thousands of hours each year
  • Deliver convservation projects that strengthen our community's connection to nature

Why your support matters

Every year, the Hunter Wetlands Centre faces increasing challenges , invasive species, changing water conditions, storm impacts, habitat loss, and the ongoing costs of managing a large, complex ecosystem. Your monthly donation provides practical, on-the-ground support where it’s needed most.

It ensures we can continue opening our doors to the community, offering nature experiences, education, and conservation programs for all ages.

Keep the Vision Alive

What began as Max Maddock’s dream has become a living, thriving example of what community-led environmental restoration can achieve.

By becoming a Friend of the Wetlands, you become part of that story, helping us protect wildlife, restore habitats, and create a place where people and nature can connect.
