Wetlands 40th Anniversary Art & Writing Competition for Primary School Students

The Hunter Wetlands Centre is celebrating 40 Years of restoration, conservation and education in September 2024. We would like to invite infants and primary schools in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Region to get involved with the celebrations by participating in an art and writing competition in terms 2 & 3.

Category 1 - Art

Make a wonderful wetlands picture using the picture provided or create your own wetlands scene. Include wetland animals and plants in your picture.

Get creative – use pencils, paint, textas or collage. A list of some animals and plants that could be in your picture is on our website. Individual, group (no more than 3) and class entries accepted.

 

Category 2 - Writing

Write a narrative, a poem, an acrostic or an information report on one of the following Hunter Wetlands Centre wetland species:  Magpie Goose, Freckled Duck, Australasian Bittern, Egret, Spoonbill, Eastern Long-neck Turtle, Green and Golden Bell Frog or Red-bellied Black Snake.

These can be presented in hard copy or digital format on a USB and should be no morethan 500 words. Remember to acknowledge your sources.

 

Prizes

Winners will be awarded in each category and entries will be judged in stages.

One class in each category will be selected to receive a Wetland on Wheels visit. The Animal Care Team volunteers will bring a selection of reptiles to your school for aninteractive presentation for a class.

 

A selection of work will be published onour website and on our Facebook page. Winning entries will be announced on Wednesday 25th September and will then be on display during the school holidays until 11 October 2024.
